Mean Things to Say to Your Ex (That Belong in a Letter, Not a Text)

April 28, 20259 min readBy This Is Toxic

Everyone has a list. It usually lives in the notes app, titled something like "do not send." It gets edited at 1am, added to during arguments, and consulted only when needed for morale.

Here are 40 mean things to say to your ex, sorted by energy level, all safely legal. Then, at the end, the honest part: why almost none of these belong in a text, and where the line actually is.

    Want the strategic version instead?

    Mild (dinner party petty)

    • You have the emotional range of a parking meter.
    • You were an experience, not a relationship.
    • You dated me. I studied you.
    • You are a lesson, not a loss.
    • I hope your therapist charges you double.
    • You were the plot twist. I am the main character.
    • You have the confidence of someone who has never been fact-checked.
    • I have moved on. You are moving furniture.
    • You were a soft launch that never landed.
    • You were a placeholder.
    • You gave me the closure of a Ziploc bag from 2019.
    • You are the reason my group chat has a folder.
    • You are the "before" in someone else's glow up.

    Medium (post-breakup group chat)

    • You are why my Spotify Wrapped had a "healing" category.
    • I dodged something, and it wore your cologne.
    • You had six months to become a good person. You used them to grow a mustache.
    • You were a red flag with a good camera angle.
    • Every version of you was a beta.
    • You had potential. I had patience. Neither of us used them well.
    • You are the reason my mother learned to say "I told you so" in three languages.
    • You were the middle chapter of a book I now recommend as a warning.
    • You had one job. You outsourced it.
    • You had the personality of a Wi-Fi password nobody remembers.
    • I gave you my best year. You gave me a folder of screenshots.
    • You did not lose me. You misplaced me and then bragged.
    • You are the human version of a group project.

    Scorched earth but legal

    • You spent so much time faking depth that you started drowning in the shallow end.
    • I do not miss you. I miss the version of me that was still willing to be lied to.
    • You mistook my patience for stupidity for so long that you started believing your own casting.
    • You never dated me. You audited me.
    • You will spend the rest of your life explaining me to people who will side with me anyway.
    • You are exactly who I thought you were, and I am relieved every day I do not have to argue with you about it.
    • Your apologies were coupons. They expired.
    • You are the receipt at the bottom of a bag from a store I no longer shop at.
    • The best thing you ever did for me was leave. The second best thing was making it obvious enough that no one had questions.
    • You are not a mistake. You are a data point.
    • You had the personality of an unread contract, and I signed anyway.
    • You are the answer to a question I will never be asked again.
    • You will be a story I tell exactly once, and it will be very short.
    • Save the "we should talk" energy for someone who has not seen you at your worst on a Tuesday morning.

    Why paper beats texting

A mean text is a receipt. A mean text is admissible. A mean text is a screenshot that lives forever in a group chat you were not invited to.

A physical letter is different. It lives in their hand, then their drawer, then their memory. There is no forward button. There is no read receipt. There is just paper, ink, and a slow, private read.

Also, and this matters: paper is calm. A text sent in a rage looks like a rage. A letter written the same night, sat on for two days, edited down to the sharpest six sentences, and then mailed, does not look like a rage. It looks like a decision.

A decision hits harder than a rage every single time.

    Where the line actually is

Every line on the list above is legal. Petty, yes. Mean, sure. But legal.

Here is what is not legal, and what will absolutely not go through our review process:

    • Threats of any kind. Not a joke. Not a bit. Never.
    • Repeated unwanted contact after they have asked you to stop. That is harassment.
    • Anything that publishes their private information (address, workplace, family contacts).
    • Sexual content, sexual coercion, or anything targeting them at work in a sexual context.
    • Anything involving a minor, ever.
    • Extortion, blackmail, or "if you do not do X, I will do Y."

The line is not blurry. Petty is a genre. Threats are a crime. This is a novelty catharsis brand, not a harassment platform. Every physical mail order is reviewed by a human before it prints.
