How to Write a Secret Admirer Letter That Isn't Creepy

July 8, 20268 min readBy This Is Toxic

A secret admirer letter is one of the most romantic things you can put in a mailbox.

It is also, done badly, one of the fastest ways to end up on a coworker's HR calendar or a friend's "we need to talk" text. The line between "delightful mystery" and "please call the police" is real, and it is not as blurry as the movies make it look.

Below: what a secret admirer letter actually is, the exact line between charming and creepy, five templates that stay firmly on the charming side, and how to actually send it anonymously without weirdness.

What is a secret admirer letter, actually

A secret admirer letter is a short, anonymous, complimentary note sent to someone you are sweet on, with no return address and no name at the bottom. Historically it was a Valentine's tradition, sent on February 14th with a small drawing, a poem, or a single line. Modern versions still tend to arrive around Valentine's, birthdays, or after a specific moment (a big work presentation, a performance, a public win) where the sender wants to say "I noticed" without saying "it is me".

The point is not to guess who wrote it. The point is to make one person feel, for one afternoon, like the main character of a novel. Whether they figure out who sent it or not is almost beside the point. The letter itself is the gift.

The exact line between charming and creepy

A charming secret admirer letter is a compliment. A creepy one is a surveillance report. That is the whole rule. Everything else is a footnote.

Charming looks like this: "Just wanted you to know your laugh is the best sound in that entire office." Specific enough to be personal. Vague enough that it does not read like you have been tracking their movements. Complimentary about a quality, not a body part. Ends with something warm, not something suggestive.

Creepy looks like this: "I saw you leave your yoga class on Thursday at 6:47pm and I thought about you the whole way home. I love the way your car looks in the parking lot. I know we have not met but I feel like we already have." Every sentence is a data point. Every data point is a receipt for how much you have been paying attention. None of this is romantic. All of it is a case file.

The test is simple. Read your letter out loud and imagine your subject reading it to their best friend. If the friend says "aww", send it. If the friend says "wait, what?", do not.

Stay away from all of these

    • References to their schedule, their car, their home, or their route anywhere.
    • Compliments on specific body parts, especially ones covered by clothing.
    • Anything sexual. Any language you would not use in a group work chat.
    • Anything that implies you have watched them without them knowing.
    • Repeat letters, sent regularly, when the first one was not acknowledged. One letter is romantic. Six is a police report.

    Five secret admirer letter templates

Change the details. Send exactly one.

    Template 1: The Compliment

You do not know me, and this letter is not asking you to.

You are one of the most quietly kind people I have ever crossed paths with, and I did not want another week to go by without someone telling you that.

That is the whole letter. You do not owe anything back.

    A very lucky witness.

    Template 2: The Post-Big-Moment Note

What you did last week was extraordinary. You should know that at least one person in that room walked out of it thinking about it for days.

You are talented and you are, more importantly, thoughtful about that talent. Those two things do not always come in the same envelope. In you, they do.

    With admiration,

    An audience member.

    Template 3: The Valentine

    Happy Valentine's Day.

You do not know me well, and I am not writing to change that. I am writing because I wanted, for one day, to be the reason somebody smiled at a piece of mail.

That is you today. You are the reason.

    Yours in mild mystery,

    A secret admirer.

    Template 4: The Old-Fashioned

This is the kind of letter people used to write on paper, mail from the next town over, and never sign.

I thought it would be a shame to let the tradition die out entirely. So: I think you are wonderful. I think the world is better with you in it. I hope your week is soft in all the right places and interesting in all the good ones.

That is all. I am not writing again. Enjoy the mystery.

    Warmly,

    Someone who noticed.

    Template 5: The Reveal-Optional

This is a letter with two possible endings.

Ending one: you read it, you smile, you have no idea who it is from, and you get on with your beautiful day.

Ending two: you have a hunch, you decide the hunch is worth acting on, and you tell one specific person that you would say yes to a coffee if they asked. That person will hear you.

    Either way, you are wonderful.

    Yours if you want,

    A secret admirer.

How to actually mail it anonymously

The DIY version is riskier than people think. Your handwriting is a fingerprint. Your local postmark is a zip code. A blank return address sometimes gets returned to sender. And if you drop it in a mailbox on your block, you have narrowed the suspect list to your neighbors on the exact block. All of which slightly ruins the mystery.

The cleaner move is to send it through a service that handles the physical anonymity for you. Ours prints the letter in a handwriting-style font (no handwriting sample), mails it from our fulfillment center (a neutral zip code, not yours), and uses a neutral return address that traces back to us, not you. The recipient sees a real, sealed, stamped, hand-mailed letter. Nothing on the envelope points home.

    The one-letter rule

Send exactly one. That is the rule.

A single secret admirer letter is romance. Two is a coincidence. Three or more, without an acknowledgment, is a pattern, and patterns are the whole point of every restraining order ever filed. If you send one and they never mention it, respect the silence. That was your one shot to make their day. You took it. That is the entire deal.

If you know them well enough that the single letter is a running joke you both love, great. Send more. That is a relationship, not a mystery. But if you do not know them well, one letter is the whole game, and stopping is the difference between "sweet story" and "I called my landlord".
